Cadia is an ornamental shrub from Eastern Africa and Arabia, at 500-2100 m asl. It has graceful arching branches with pinnate leaves and bell-shaped flowers that change their colour while they age. They start with a pale cream colour and then turn pink and eventually purple. Cadia purpurea usually gets only 1-2 m tall but with time it can easily reach 4 or more meters if the climate is fine.
Cadia is in the pea family but it is evolutionarily unusual in having bell-shaped flowers. All its relatives have bilateral symmetry and Cadia has gone back (or forward?) to a radial symmetry.
