Each bulb bears two lanceolate leaves per year and produces showy spikes of white flowers, about 20 cm tall in March or April, just before leaves die off. Lachenalia liliiflora is one of the latest-blooming in the genus, as most Lachenalia flower in mid-winter, at the end of the growing season. It is native to hilly slopes in the Renosterveld in the southwestern Cape.
Lachenalias are winter growing bulbs. Keep completely dry and shaded during the warmer months. Most species love fast-draining sandy soil and can be grown in 12-14 cm pots. Plants should be kept in a sunny position and will grow very happily outside during the cooler months providing it doesn't drop below freezing.
