Erst kürzlich zur Familie der Asparagaceae hinzugezählt, umfasst die Gattung der Sansevieria um die 70 Arten, nahezu alle in Afrika, auf der arabischen Halbinsel und Madagaskar beheimatet. Mehrjährige Pflanzen die an den an den angepasst sind trockenen Lebensraum mit steifen, sukkulenten Blättern, deren Länge von wenigen Zentimetern bis zu zwei Meter variiert. Sansevieria trifasciata und ihre vielen Sorten zählen zu den beliebtesten Hauspflanzen, im Volksmund auch "Schwiegermutterzunge“ genannt. Eine gut gewachsene Pflanze erzeugt in der Regel eine Spitze von weißen, stark duftenden Blüten und danach orangene Beeren. Sogar die seltensten Arten sind resistent gegen Vernachlässigung, vorausgesetzt man hält im Winter Frost und im Sommer pralle Sonne von ihnen fern.
