This endangered cycad is a "micro-endemic", known only from the Tomellin Canyon in Oaxaca, Mexico, at 1,000 to 1,500 m asl. The rainfall in habitat is 500 - 1000 mm per year.  Average temperatures range 20 to 30 ºC in summer and 10 to 20 ºC in winter, with occasional cold shots.
