Showy silvery hybrid, with compact rosettes to 20 cm wide. Leaves are coated in furry trichomes, wide at the base and armed with large, white, recurved marginal spines. As any good hybrid should be, this one is highly ornamental and easy to grow: 'Avalanche' takes well hot-to-cool and wet-to-dry conditions. This Dyckia is a cross of D. marnier-lapostollei var. estevesii x (D. fosteriana x D. platyphylla), obtained by Bob Spivey, a man based in Louisiana, who also developed other related dyckias, such as “Snowball', 'Confetti' and 'Ice Follies'.
