Gustavia augusta is a conversation piece of unforgettable beauty. In India, it is called "Majestic Heaven Lotus". This brazilian tree is related to the Brazil nut and the cannonball tree, in the Lecythidiaceae family, all with similar, appealing flowers.

Cultivation of Gustavia

It is the perfect small tree for a greenhouse, it can also flower in large pots, at less than 2 m tall. It is quite easy to grow. The best specimens are found in partial sun, in a humid and windless environment. But surprisingly trees do grow and flower also in harsh, exposed conditions. Here in the Canary Islands some plants do stand full sun, wind and the occasional drought. Despite its tropical origin, Gustavia augusta is not bothered by long, cool winters, but it must be kept at least above 5 C.
