This hard to find species is an excellent garden subject, suitable to non-tropical climates. It blooms in April to August in the Canary Islands, and earlier in the tropics (December to May in Puerto Rico). Bracts are solid, glossy purplish red, with bright yellow flowers inside.
Heliconia bourgeana is a species with obvious ornamental appeal. I can be tried outdoors in sheltered, coastal warm Mediterranean climates. It is also easily grown in pots and overwintered in a greenhouse.
We ship healthy field-grown rhizomes with at least two active growing points. Visit this LINK, see pictures of our heliconia rhizomes and learn more about what we ship.
