This palm is a great ornamental. It is very beautiful as a juvenile because of the reddish stem and petioles and the deep green leaves. They are very fast when young. Once they start making a trunk, they will soon slow down and start to bloom. The red colour will fade and a new show will start: inflorescences are incredibly fragrant and long lasting. This is probably the most scented of all palms ! Hyophorbe indica is endangered in its native island in the Mascarene islands, but each day it is becoming less rare in cultivation. This red form naturally occurs on the Southern side of the island of La Reunion.
