Marcetella is an elegant shrub with regularly arranged pinnate leaves, with colouful petioles. Flushes of new leaves are bright red. This Canarian native grows wild at mid-low elevation, in mediterranean-like conditions. It is easy to grow and can be watered througout the year, as it is evergreen. This species is dioecious, so male and female flowers occur on different specimens.

Marcetella moquiniana is endemic to three islands of the Canarian Archipelago: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Gomera.

This species is found at mid-low elevation, in the Canarian "termophilous woodland". This is a Mediterranean-type scrub with hot and dry summers and cool and wet winters. Marcetella moquiniana can grow in cool temperatures, and can also take short light, frost, but this species does better if protected from frost. The common name used in Tenerife, and mostly throughout the Canary Islands is: Palo de sangre
