Phormiums are great ornamentals from the South Pacific, they are hardy to -10 or lower, so they are perfect to create an exotic look in non-tropical gardens. They give the deep colours and the touch of the exotic cordylines and crotons that are commonly used in the tropics. The green cultivars of Phormium are used by New Zealand's Maoris to make fibres and this is why they are called New Zealand Flax.
