Old cultivar of sugarcane from the SE U.S.A., made for chewing, juice, candy-making, syrup production and, last and also sugar production, even if it new cultivars replaced it long ago in the industy. Internodes are brown-purplish, and there is a band of white wax at each node. Canes grow rather upright and they often show a slight "zig-zag" shape, with a kink at each node.
Even if the industry has anandoned this cultivar for new the new hybrids, this sugarcane is still grown in many family backyards in the SE USA. Local names are bit confusing as Florida Red is also called Louisiana Purple and Georgia Red.
