This unusual, climbing Tillandsia is one of the most admirable: Tillandsia duratii is one of the largest of all xeric tillandsias. It is very elegant -all grey-white - and unusual in the way it holds on branches. Tillandsia duratii lacks roots, while its curly tips act as tendrils and grab branches in order to achieve support. The inflorescence is extremely scented and lasts for weeks. It has a very wide range in habitat, both in the Gran Chaco region (spanning from Northern Argentina to Bolivia and Paraguay) and the Andean foothills of Argentina and southern Brazil. Nevertherless it is far from common in cultivation because it is slow and anyone wants one!
Grow in very high light to keep it happy.
We offer a young adult that has already bloomed at least twice.
Our Tillandsias - What do we ship?
We grow our grey-leaved tillandsias outdoors, here in Tenerife. We start them by dividing large adults, so they are all "XXL" in size. They grow exposed to full sun, rain and wind during the winter months and we shift them to morning-to-midday sun during the hot months. By doing so they become very robust.
Tillandsias are extreme epiphytes that typically do not like to be planted in pots. Most of them prefer to be hung on branches or wires. We do not provide any support with the plant that we ship so be prepared to fix your airplant. We recommend to tie them with nylon fishing line, or metal wire as a second option. We never use glue, since it can cause problems.
