This plant is popular and easy in cultivation. Stems and leaves are grey-silvery and each leaf resembles a coin. A few spiralling tendrils are produced here and there. The latin name Xero-sicyos means "dry cucumber" , because it is a member of the pumpkin family and it is native to semi-desert areas in SW Madagascar. It is often pruned and kept small in pots, with a height of 30-60 cm, but both in the wild and in warm-weather gardens it eventually becomes a large and shrubby liana, with thick stems up to 4 m long. It is getting common in cultivation and often called the "silver dollar" or "silver coin" vine.
