Bixa orellana - Achiote, Annatto

Evergreen shrub or small tree, up to 4-5 m tall, with glossy ornamental foliage and wide pink flowers. Its fruits are the source of a popular food colouring and flavouring, made from the seeds. The same seeds have been also extensively used for body painting and lipstick by american natives.

Bixa orellana is native to tropical America, but it is now popular througout the world. It can grow and fruit in large pots.
