This large sized Mitrophyllum branches freely and produces erect stems. Large plants can grow tall as small shrubs, reaching 50 cm in height.
The species of Mitrophyllum are winter growing South African mesembs. They produce two different types of leaves: One pair of divided, spreading leaves, and another pair of two leaves fused, forming a rounded cone. Both type of leaves are present only for some time in winter. Their colour is jade green and eventually turns whitish-brown when they go dormant in the hotter and drier months. In Summer, only one pair stays alive, protected withing the dry papery sheats of the former, dead leaves.
