Sono gimnosperme, nell'ordine Cycadales, in modo da non producono fiori, ma fanno crescere coni, come pini ed altre conifere. Si trovano in gran parte delle regioni calde del mondo e sono spesso in pericolo e confinati in zone inaccessibili. Alcuni crescono in zone montane fredde e tollerano gelo e neve.
