No todas las palmeras son tropicales. Algunas de estas especies provienen de áreas subtropicales e incluso, soportan temperaturas frías. Estas especies son palmeras pinnadas (hojas en forma de pluma) y pueden crecer en zonas donde las heladas son poco frecuentes.
