Las cícadas son un grupo de plantas primitivas, con formas similares a las palmeras y helechos. Son gimnospermas, en el orden Cycadales, por lo que no producen flores, pero sí que producen conos, como los pinos y otras coníferas. Se encuentran en la mayor parte de las zonas más cálidas del mundo, y a menudo se encuentran en peligro y restringidas a zonas de difícil acceso. Algunas crecen en zonas montañosas frías y toleran las heladas y la nieve.
La mayoría de las especies de cícadas se desarrollan bien en el jardín y son excelentes plantas de maceta. Algunas se han convertido plantas ornamentales populares, mientras que otras son muy raras y están protegidas por la ley, como las especies CITES. Edentata is one of the most beautiful of the coastal Asian cycads. Leaves are glossy, with golden prominent veins. Leaf bases and young stems are coated with a reddish-golden "fur". It is quite fast and easy to grow and just as hardy as the typical rumphii-circinalis.
