Las Heliconias es un género de unas 200 especies conocidas por su por sus inflorescencias tropicales. Las Heliconias tienen grandes y exóticas hojas verdes y flores muy coloridas. Tiene un rápido crecimiento como las Canna o las plataneras, a menudo se encuentran en zonas húmedas y polinizadas por colibríes.
Muchas especies son sensibles a las heladas, pero unas pocas pueden vivir en elevaciones altas y condiciones más frías, y cercerán bien en un clima mediterráneo templado. Enviamos rizomas cultivados con al menos dos puntos de crecimiento activo. La Esterlitzia es la famosa flor "ave del paraíso".
Es un género con cinco especies, y algunas variedades más o subespecies, todas nativas de Sudáfrica. Todas ellas son plantas ornamentales de jardín, con amplio follaje y flores vistosas, ampliamente cultivadas en las Islas Canarias. Son enviadas en macetas.
