General Information

Very ornamental succulent species native to rocky areas of northwestern Madagascar. Leaves can be very showy, 20 to 50 cm long, with silvery colour and a remarkable banding. Also inflorescences are tall and elegant. It was named after the French botanist Gaston Bonnier.

Cultivation

Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri is fast growing and easy to keep, even in pots. Well grown plants can quickly become enormous. Hard-grown plants will stay smaller but they can flower too. So leaves can be small or large according to conditions. It should be kept drier in winter and watered regularly in Summer, It likes full sun, especially in Northern latitudes.  It can also grow in half shade in Mediterranean or Subtropical countries. Soil should always be draining, with sand or grit. It is a prolific species as it forms little new plants on the tip of largest leaves.

This Kalanchoe is cold sensitive and should be kept above 6 C.

Uses

Besides its widespread use as an ornamental plant for desert gardens and collectors, leaves of Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri are said to have many therapeutic uses related to cellular damage, including cancer, inflammation, wounds and many others.
