Piper auritum is an aromatic shrub with very ornamental large heart-shaped, velvety leaves, which are anise-scented. It is native to Central America and its widespread common name "hoja santa" means "sacred leaf" in Spanish, because it has many uses in the native cuisine but it is also grown as a medicinal plant.
In Cuba there is a famous tea, made out of its leaves. It is named "Caisimon", just as the plant itself.
