New leaves come out together but then they fold out and twist in different directions. Flowers are yellow and fragrant. This air-plant is known from dry valleys in the Andes of Bolivia, Uruguay and Jujuy in Argentina, at 1500 to 3000 m elevation. Tillandsia caliginosa is hardy to harsh conditions and mediterranean short frosts.
