Benrathii is the smallest variety of a widely grown frost hardy bromeliad: Aechmea recurvata. This smaller variety is endemic to Santa Catalina, in SE Brazil, and reaches 10-16 cm in diameter. When blooming the upper part of the plant turns bright pink for 2-3 months.

Aechmea recurvata is a tolerant to different conditions and even to neglect. It can be grown in sun or shade, in rock gardens, on trees, in baskets or in a bright terrarium. They can be planted epiphytically, mounted on rock or wood. This species also resists to drought and frost.

This hardy plant is useful in cold areas to give a tropical look to the garden. Palm enthusiasts in cold countries grow this bromeliad epiphytically on Trachycarpus trunks to create a rainforest effect.

It will take long cool winters and frost to about - 10 C. It can grow outdoors in many areas of the United Kingdom, undamaged at -8 C (18 F).
