Is this the best ornamental colourful foliage on earth? This is a rather dwarf banana tree with fully speckled leaves with all the hues of orange and red, intermingled with lime-green speckles. This plant probably originated in Papua New Guinea, which is the main center of origin of banana diversity. It is considered a colourful mutant of the edible cultivar named 'Tapo'. The bad news for those who live away from the tropics is that it is not resistant to cold and just as many "AA diploid" bananas, it likes heat and full sun and starts suffering when temperatures go down to 10 C. The good news is that it is a very compact plant, tightly clumping and rather short, so it can be kept in containers and it is easier to protect amd handle than most bananas. Its large orange-burgundy sreminiscent of other top-hit banana-leaves such as Ensete maurellii and Heliconia indica spectabilis, but this Musa is all speckled and glows more on the orange side.
