Palm-like tree of unreal architecture, native to Madagascar and Mauritius. A symbol of tropical gardening. The base is supported by very thick stilt-roots, the upright stem is smooth and divides regularly, forming a pyramid-shaped tree, 3-20 m (9-66 ft) tall. Simple, teethed strap-Leaves are arranged as a spiral, and fruits are shaped like pineapples, so the common name in English is "screw pine". Male and female sexes are found on different plants. Male flowers are scented. It is sensitive to frost. It can be tried outdoors in the warmer areas of the Mediterranean.
Long specimen with 6cm of diameter and 1,1 meters long.
