This is the famous red mangrove, a truly surprising tree that grows in sea water, forming thick stilt roots at the base. It is easy to grow and it does not really need any salt - you can keep it for years in a bucket with fresh water, or in a half-submerged pot. Our plants descend from the populations in Subtropical Florida, North of Miami, exposed to occasional light frosts.

Cultivation of a Red Mangrove

This tree will branch and form stilt roots even in cultivation, it can actually be kept as a potted shrub, about 2 m tall. Young mangroves will even flower in pots when about 4-5 years old.

Rhizophora mangle can take cool frost-free winters but it is a coastal species that grows fast only when minimum temperatures are above18 C, otherwise it just stays. It is better to keep it above 5 C in winter, because it is damaged by frost and should be protected even in Mediterranean Climates.

We offer a 2 years old potted plant, 40-60 tall.
